My varied health service work over the last twenty years led me into
wanting to train and qualify as a counsellor. I felt I wanted to train in
the field of counselling in order to add to my varied skills gained whilst
working in the NHS and to have the opportunity and ability to work with
clients at deeper relational depth.
These days I split my working week with three
different jobs. I divide my time between working as a health visitor,
working as a counsellor within a GP practice and working for myself seeing
private counselling clients at York Clinic.
I love the variety and really enjoy the work I do.
How I work
What I bring to my work as a counsellor is a genuine interest and
respect for you as an individual. I will take time to encourage you to talk about what
concerns you most. Through the process of talking about your difficulties and experiences I
hope you will find ways to understand them better and to work towards making changes if
you want to. My approach to counselling has a humanistic base. This means that I will give
my full attention to you as an individual and will encourage you to find ways forward
which are right for you. It also means to me that I bring knowledge and experience of
working with different theoretical counselling frameworks and techniques, and I am able to
adapt my counselling style to suit the needs of the person I am working with. However I
believe that the quality of the relationship that develops between us is ultimately key to
the successful outcome of the counselling for you. I offer short or longer term
counselling. We will discuss what you would hope to gain from counselling when we
initially meet and if we agree to work together we will review progress at regular
intervals. I am a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and
I am bound by their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
(For more details visit www.bacp.co.uk) I work from
York Clinic for Complementary Medicine, 296 Tadcaster Road. York YO24 1ET on
Friday afternoons. It provides a good environment for
one to one work. My fee is £38 per hour.
