"Is shiatsu the thing for me?" By Maggie Barton

Yorkshire Evening Press, 22nd July 2002

shiats1.jpg (12207 bytes) Q I seem to be on the go all the time and even when I sit down and relax I don’t seem able to anymore – could some shiatsu help me?

A A Shiatsu session is assisted relaxation. The client lies down fully clothed on a comfortable war mat and for 45 minutes the Shiatsu practitioner gently stretches, loosens and eases tensions in the body, particularly in the neck, shoulders, feet and ankles – releasing energy and inducing a sense of stillness and complete relaxation in the client. There is a sense of well being after the session which can last for some time and as each session builds on the previous one the client builds up an increasingly longer-lasting sense of ease and well being in the mind and increases emotional strength.

Q Is Shiatsu then only for relaxation? Or can it help specific problems – as I don’t sleep very well these days and I’ve started getting headaches quite a lot and sometimes I get anxious about all sorts of things for no real reason.

A Yes it can help specific problems like these because they are symptoms of energy imbalance un the body and Shiatsu as well as relaxing the body, works along the energy lines known as meridians to bring the body back into balance and so alleviate those unpleasant symptoms. The practitioner uses fingers, thumbs, palms knees and feet working all the way along these energy lines which run along the arms, legs, back, neck and head ending in the fingers, toes and on the face. It’s a very gentle and supportive process and is not at all painful.

Q What do I wear? And what can I expect from a Shiatsu session?

A It is best to wear loose fitting clothing that allows room for movement – a cotton jumper or T-shirt rather than a woven fabric skirt or exercise trousers rather than jeans. A pair of socks is a good idea too.
A session lasts about an hour in total. A medical history is taken at the beginning of the first session there is usually some discussion about progress; and at the end some discussion about the session itself answering any questions the client may have. A Shiatsu practitioner works in silence – so there is no conversation for the 45 minutes of body work. There is usually quiet background music. At the end of the 45 minutes the client remains reclining for a few minutes to enjoy the sense of calm and well being the session generated.

Q So how do I know if it’s for me or not?

A If Shiatsu appeals to you and you think it may help or be useful to you then the best way to know is just to try it – once is sufficient to know. From one session you will know yourself whether or not it is helping you – and if its worth while continuing with it. Some clients come for regular sessions – often monthly – to maintain there energy and well being and recharge their batteries for the stress of life. Other clients use occasional Shiatsu sessions as a calming preparation for a stressful event – an interview, meeting or performance of some kind. Shiatsu is good physical and mental preparation and useful support in times of excessive stress.
