What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a safe and effective form of manual therapy that works on the basis that structure governs function (and vice versa), whereby any given tissue, (bone, muscle, ligament, tendon, joint, organ), that is not in it’s correct alignment or position will be unable to function properly, which may lead to pain, restriction & inflammation.

Osteopathy aims to help the body to return to its normal function & works with the body’s own natural healing process via gentle soft tissue techniques (massage), mobilization of the spine and joints & occasionally manipulation which involves a quick but gentle release of a joint.

Cranial osteopathy (or cranial-sacral therapy) is another technique that is employed by osteopaths. This very gentle treatment is particularly useful for children, babies and the elderly.

What happens in a consultation?

Your first consultation with an osteopath will involve taking a thorough case & medical history after which the osteopath will examine you. Usually you will be asked to undress down to your underwear for the examination. After taking you through active movements and performing the relevant orthopaedic tests the osteopath will inform you of their diagnosis and where appropriate will proceed with treatment.

What do osteopaths treat?

Osteopaths treat a wide range of physical problems which include:

Low back pain Arthritis and general muscle/joint pain
Sciatica Sports injuries
Neck pain Headaches
Back pain in pregnancy Postural problems
Repetitive strain injuries (e.g. carpal tunnel, tennis/golfers elbow)
