Judith Emery

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

About Judith Emery:   "As a clinician I have enjoyed my extensive experience in the field of mental health and this year (2007) I retired from The Retreat Hospital in York. Ten years ago I developed a successful cognitive behavioural outpatient service for The Retreat and more recently I was part of the outpatient psychotherapy service at the Tuke Centre there. This autumn I have begun to establish a small private CBT service from the York Clinic.

I have been committed to my work and over the years of massive change this is something that has not changed.  As a fully accredited member of the BABCP (British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) and of the UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) the ethical and professional considerations represented by these leading psychotherapy organisations underpin my practice.

In assisting clients I encourage a straightforward approach toward a vital partnership and call on my broad experience in helping with the emotional problems that are presented in session and with the intense personal distress that is often a feature. I also encourage individuals to develop a realistic and compassionate view of their own situation."

Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (CBT/P)

CBT is helpful for many emotional problems and for some problems research does indicate that CBT is the treatment of choice. It can be relatively short term therapy (6-12 sessions) and requires active engagement over the period. Therapy aims to identify and accurately understand the problem-experience and to use techniques that target unhelpful thoughts, assumptions and behaviours and allow a significant change in everyday emotional functioning. How this is to be achieved is very carefully discussed and planned each session - change of this type cannot be imposed.

If CBT seems appropriate for you
(if in doubt your GP will guide you) and if you would like an appointment for CBT at the York Clinic for Complementary Medicine (fees £70 per 50-60 min session) - or if you would like more details please do contact Judith 0784 6307108.
