Article in "Megaphone online", University of York, November 2003 First Prize in Oslo Hugh MacPherson, Senior Research Fellow at the University of York, has won joint first prize for best presentation at the World Federation of Acupuncture Societies in Oslo in September. His paper was entitled "Acupuncture safety: what patients report on adverse effects". As an invited speaker, Hugh MacPherson reported on a UK national survey of 6,300 acupuncture patients and their experiences of adverse events associated with 30,000 acupuncture treatments. Even though over 1,000 adverse events were reported, most commonly severe tiredness after treatment, overall the results reinforced current evidence that acupuncture, when practised by qualified and registered practitioners, is a relatively safe intervention. As a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Health Sciences funded by the Department of Health, Hugh MacPherson is now working with Sylvia Shroer and Beverley Lawton on a project to evaluate acupuncture for depression. |
