Needles can beat tinnitus Daily Mail, 11th October 2005
Acupuncture could offer relief for tinnitus, a ringing in the ears
affecting millions of Britons. New research
shows that most patients improved after two weeks of treatment. More than four million people in the United
Kingdom suffer from tinnitus, which causes a varying hissing or ringing noise in the
ear. No cure has yet been found, but in the new research at the
Universityof York, acupuncture was used to treat six patients. They were aged 32 to 79 and had suffered for
between one and twenty years with the complaint. The group was given ten acupuncture treatments over a two-week
period. The needle sites and number of points
used varied between patients. The needles
were kept in place for 20 minutes. Almost
all patients showed improvements. After two weeks, there was a drop in loudness and pitch and fewer
hours affected by tinnitus in the majority of patients.
Only one patient, the eldest, felt worse.
The quality of sleep also improved in the majority of patients. The most noticeable improvement was in the
youngest patient, a 32-year old woman who had suffered with tinnitus in both ears for
about a year. More work is needed, but our results support the idea that
acupuncture might be beneficial for people with tinnitus, says Dr Hugh
MacPherson, a Senior Research Fellow at York. |
