Acupuncture and massage therapy

Chrissie Thomas

Chrissie is an Acupuncturist and Advanced Clinical Massage Therapist.

Her special interest is in the treatment of Chronic Pain. This includes Soft Tissue Pathologies and other related pain conditions. She works in an integrated way blending Eastern and Western methods using various styles of bodywork often combined with acupuncture if appropriate.

Chrissie studied Educational Science, Psychology and Sociology initially. She later became interested in bodywork twenty five years ago and trained in Holistic Massage purely out of personal interest in the power of touch and the body-mind connection. She then took a break to become a full-time mother. After the birth of her second child Chrissie became ill and experienced a lot of pain as part of her symptoms, acupuncture helped her on her journey back to health. She became fascinated and curious about Chinese Medicine which eventually led her to study it at degree level.

While working at the York based ‘Love Community Acupuncture’ Clinic she re-discovered her passion for bodywork and decided to invest in more specialized training in this area. It now defines the way she works. She uses a combination of both modalities: acupuncture and massage whenever appropriate.

My conviction is that our bodies and our minds have the innate ability to heal and to become free from pain. I work from the viewpoint that Chronic Pain is rarely 'just' a physical problem.

I see myself as a facilitator working in partnership with you to get the results you need by alleviating the discomfort or pain, restoring function or increasing range of motion if possible. We will aim to reduce stress levels, explore and discover what may be the root cause of your pain, understand contributing factors and empower you to manage your condition including flare ups. I will work with you to tailor a treatment plan to suit your needs. If appropriate I will also assist with some supportive lifestyle advice and additional stretching and strengthening exercises as part of the treatment plan. This process puts you in the driving seat of your recovery as well as improves posture, performance and function.

Bodywork techniques include: Myofascial Release; Deep Tissue work; Muscle Energy Techniques; Stretching (static stretching; Proprio-Neuromuscular Facilitation and Active Isolated Stretching; Trigger Point Therapy; Tuina (Chinese Medical Massage); Acupressure; Cupping; Moxa and Hot Stone Therapy.

I am very passionate about my work. I love what I do and am always on the lookout to learn more. I am very interested in the study of the pain mechanism, especially in how western medical science and ancient healing techniques compare and differ in their approaches. What interests me most is how they can be used in an integrated way to optimise management and recovery from symptoms.

"I had a long standing problem in my upper arm, and was recommended to come here by a renowned health professional. Sure enough, after a couple of sessions my arm improved markedly and after following recommended exercises, is now pain free. Chrissie is extremely friendly and soon puts you at ease. She is very skilled and I was most impressed."

"I have recently had insomnia for around 3 months which was brought on from the lockdown.

I decided to have acupuncture which I had only tried twice before with a different person. After the first session I told Chrissie my issues with stress and anxiety which were causing me to have sleep problems. She listened very well and took lots of details of these problems. After the needles were inserted into the points of my body, I felt calm after around 5 minutes. The more I relaxed the more the needles started to kick in and I started to feel deeply relaxed. All my body felt like what I can only describe as 'floating in the air peacefully' and it felt like a wonderful healing experience. When I went home I felt very calm, much more than usual. When I went to bed I got the best night's sleep in months, which has improved every night."
